General Business (GBL)

Learn more about the DCRA's General Business License.

Roadmap

All businesses providing goods or services in the District must be licensed. The most commonly required license is called a General Business (GBL). The GBL applies to all businesses that:

  • have a tax identification number
  • perform a primary business activity that is not licensed under another BBL endorsement/category
  • are comprised of principals, who are not required to maintain licenses granted or regulated by a local, state or national certification board or body (attorney's, doctors, accountants, etc.).

To learn if you are required to obtain a GBL, contact the Business Licensing Division, (202) 442-4311 or visit DCRA at 1100 4th Street, SW, 2nd Floor, Washington, DC 20024.

You may apply for a GBL online, in-person or via mail. The associated fee is $324.50 (payable to the "D.C. Treasurer").
