General Business (GBL)
Learn more about the DCRA's General Business License.
All businesses providing goods or services in the District must be licensed. The most commonly required license is called a General Business (GBL). The GBL applies to all businesses that:
- have a tax identification number
- perform a primary business activity that is not licensed under another BBL endorsement/category
- are comprised of principals, who are not required to maintain licenses granted or regulated by a local, state or national certification board or body (attorney's, doctors, accountants, etc.).
To learn if you are required to obtain a GBL, contact the Business Licensing Division, (202) 442-4311 or visit DCRA at 1100 4th Street, SW, 2nd Floor, Washington, DC 20024.
You may apply for a GBL online, in-person or via mail. The associated fee is $324.50 (payable to the "D.C. Treasurer").
